Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 3, 2026
1. Introduction
Your privacy is important to us. It is Text Expander's policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect from you across our Chrome Extension and its associated website.
2. Data Collection and Storage
Text Expander operates entirely offline. We do not collect, transmit, or store your personal data on any external servers. All of your snippets, shortcuts, categories, and settings are saved locally on your device using the `chrome.storage.local` API.
This means that only you have access to your data. If you uninstall the extension, your local data will be deleted by the browser.
3. Exporting Data
You have the option to manually export your snippets as a JSON file to backup your data. This file is generated entirely within your browser and is saved directly to your device's local file system.
4. Third-Party Services
We do not integrate any third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising scripts within the extension.
5. Changes to This Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page.
7. Chrome Web Store Disclosures
To comply with the Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies, we provide the following explicit disclosures regarding the extension's purpose, permissions, and data usage:
Single Purpose
A productivity tool that automatically expands user-defined short abbreviations into long rich-text templates or plain text across any website.
Permission Justifications
- storage: Used to save the user's custom text snippets, shortcuts, and category preferences locally on their device.
- unlimitedStorage: Required to allow users to store massive rich-text templates, including base64-embedded images within their snippets, without encountering the browser's standard storage quota limits.
- activeTab: Used to interact with the currently active tab when the user clicks the extension icon, ensuring we only interact with the page the user is actively viewing.
- scripting: Required to inject the bundled content script into the active web page. This script monitors text input fields for the user's defined shortcuts and replaces them with their saved rich-text templates.
- Host Permissions (All URLs): The core functionality of this extension is to replace custom text shortcuts with expanded rich-text templates wherever the user is typing. Because users need their text snippets to work across any website (e.g., Gmail, Notion, Outlook), the extension requires access to all URLs.
Remote Code
We certify that we do not use any remote code. All JavaScript logic is fully contained within the extension package.
Data Usage & Collection Certifications
We certify that the following disclosures are true:
- We do not collect any Personally Identifiable Information, Health information, Financial and payment information, Authentication information, Personal communications, Location data, Web history, User activity, or Website content.
- We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties, outside of the approved use cases.
- We do not use or transfer user data for purposes that are unrelated to the item's single purpose.
- We do not use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
